Safeguarding 101 for SSAs: A Strong Turnout and Valuable Insights for WA Sporting Clubs

Sport Integrity Australia, in collaboration with the WA Government and SportWest, successfully delivered Sport Integrity Australia, in partnership with the WA Government and SportWest, successfully delivered the Safeguarding 101 for State Sporting Associations session on Friday, 20 February 2026. The session brought together leaders from across the WA sport sector, with over 50 attendees representing State Sporting Associations and sport administrators.

Held at the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport in Leederville, the session provided practical guidance, clear reporting pathways, and evidence‑based strategies to help organisations create and maintain child-safe environments.

Safeguarding in Sport

Sport Integrity Australia delivered detailed guidance on safeguarding responsibilities, reporting processes, and best‑practice approaches for clubs and associations. Attendees gained clarity on:

  • How to recognise, respond to, and report concerns about a child or young person
  • Key steps for building and maintaining a child-safe culture
  • Practical policies and actions that strengthen safety across sport
  • Resources and tools to support State Sporting Associations and local clubs

True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative

Jasmine Cappellucci, True Sport Manager, presented on the True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative, outlining approaches, tools, and free resources designed to support the mental wellbeing of participants, volunteers, and administrators. Her session emphasised the connection between wellbeing, safe environments, and positive sporting cultures.

A Strong Commitment from the Sector

The strong turnout and engagement throughout the morning highlighted the dedication of WA’s sporting leaders to child safety. Attendees valued the opportunity to connect with experts, ask questions, and access free tools and resources to support their safeguarding efforts.
