True Sport was built for the industry, by the industry. To ensure that all True Sport initiatives are strategically aligned with the program's guiding principles and the needs of the West Australian sporting sector, SportWest have created a robust framework for future strategic decision making.
A Strategic Tool for Smarter Sport Investment
SportWest, in partnership with The University of Western Australia (UWA), has collaborated to develop the True Sport Prioritisation and Planning Framework - a strategic resource designed to guide the decision-making, selection and development of future initiatives under the True Sport program.
Developed by leading health promotion researchers at The University of Western Australia, the True Sport Prioritisation and Planning Framework is a practical, evidence-based tool that empowers SportWest to assess potential initiatives based on two key criteria: impact and feasibility.
This framework ensures that future projects are not only aligned with SportWest’s strategic direction but also deliver meaningful outcomes for the Western Australian sporting community. By providing a transparent and consistent decision-making process, it supports confident investment in initiatives that will shape the future of sport in WA.
Why It Matters
With community sport playing a vital role in Western Australia’s health and wellbeing, SportWest is increasingly presented with diverse project opportunities. This framework helps determine where to focus time, investment, and effort to deliver the greatest impact.
Future Initiatives Framework Overview:
The True Sport Prioritisation Framework is built around six (6) key criteria, grouped into two (2) categories:
Category 1: Impact Assessment:
- Industry & Community Need
Addresses a significant challenge or opportunity within WA’s sporting sector. - Transformational Purpose & Outcomes
Designed to deliver measurable change across community, sector, system, or policy levels. - All-Sport Approach & Reach
Provides broad benefit across multiple sports and communities, including priority populations.
Category 2: Feasibility Assessment:
- Sustainability Pathway
Includes strategies for long-term maintenance, capacity building, and scalability. - Developed for Industry, by Industry
Built through meaningful stakeholder engagement and collaboration. - Appropriate & Deliverable
Realistically scoped and resourced with a clear implementation plan.
The comprehensive framework also includes:
- A workflow guide to support implementation, stakeholder engagement, and evidence gathering.
- A clear rationale for priority setting in sport-based health and wellbeing initiatives.
- A scoring matrix and decision-making tool to evaluate and rank initiatives.
This framework ensures that future projects are not only aligned with SportWest’s strategic direction but also deliver meaningful outcomes for the Western Australian sporting community. By providing a transparent and consistent decision-making process, it supports confident investment in initiatives that will shape the future of sport in WA.
