Cultural Education Initiative

Together, we stand as one sporting community to champion cultural safety and respect.

SportWest acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the many lands and waters across Western Australia and pays respect to Elders past and present.

We recognise and celebrate the ongoing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country, culture and community, and their enduring contribution to sport across the state.

As the peak body for sport in Western Australia, SportWest is committed to leading by example - supporting reconciliation and championing sporting environments that are respectful, inclusive and welcoming for all.

About the True Sport Cultural Education Initiative

Sport has the power to connect communities, but inclusion and cultural safety are achieved through strong leadership, shared expectations and ongoing education.

The True Sport Cultural Education Initiative supports State Sporting Associations, clubs, and community organisations across Western Australia to create culturally safe, respectful and inclusive environments for First Nations people in sport.

Supported by the WA State Government through the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, the initiative provides WA-specific resources, tools and guidance to help organisations build capability, strengthen engagement, and embed culturally informed practices across all levels of sport - supporting the sector to take meaningful steps toward reconciliation through sport.

Why It Matters

  • Sport plays a powerful role in connecting communities across Western Australia – from grassroots clubs to elite pathways. It is one of the few settings that consistently brings people together and has a strong influence on attitudes, behaviours and lived experiences.
  • By building cultural awareness and embedding inclusive practices, sporting organisations help create environments where First Nations people feel safe, respected and able to belong and thrive. This work strengthens relationships with local Aboriginal communities and Traditional Custodians, grounded in trust, respect and understanding.
  • Inclusive and culturally informed sport also fosters greater connection across diverse communities, helping participants, volunteers and supporters build awareness and respect for Aboriginal cultures and histories.
  • Through everyday sporting experiences, organisations have a tangible opportunity to play an active role in reconciliation – transforming sport into a place of learning, connection and shared pride, both on and off the field.
