In a powerful step toward supporting mental wellbeing in sport, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries has partnered with SportWest to expand access to mental health services across Western Australia. Through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Volunteer Assistance Program (VAP), available via local provider Access Wellbeing Services, eligible sporting organisations now have access to free, confidential support services designed to foster healthier, more resilient communities.
What’s Available?
Whether you're in the metro, regional, or remote areas, the EAP and VAP programs offer a range of services tailored to the needs of sports staff, volunteers, and club members:
- Counselling services – Up to five (5) one-hour sessions, free and confidential
- Conflict management – Support for resolving interpersonal or organisational disputes
- Critical incident management – Immediate assistance following traumatic events
- Manager support – Guidance for leaders navigating mental health challenges in their teams
- Manager-initiated referrals – Proactive support for staff in need
- Wellness checks – Regular mental health assessments to promote wellbeing
- Specialised training – Workshops and resources to build mental health literacy
Who Can Access These Services?
Eligible and participating State Sporting Associations (SSAs) can access critical services directly by contacting Access Wellbeing Services (AWS). SSA staff should mention their involvement in the SportWest program and provide their organisation’s name when reaching out. Read through the FAQs to find out more information and eligibility criteria.
This initiative is a proactive investment in the mental health of those who make sport happen - from the volunteers on the sidelines to the staff behind the scenes.
