SportWest's True Sport team were proud to be part of a historic moment for Western Australian sport, activating at the official reopening of the redeveloped WACA Ground, hosted by WA Cricket on Saturday 28 February 2026. The event marked the beginning of a new era for one of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues, following a $189 million transformation that blends more than 130 years of cricket heritage with modern, community‑focused facilities.
True Sport Activation: Promoting Positive Sport Experiences
As thousands of families, cricket fans and community members enjoyed the festivities throughout the precinct, True Sport hosted an engaging activation aimed at inspiring safe, positive and healthy sporting experiences across WA clubs and communities.
Our activation highlighted key True Sport initiatives, including:
- Sideline Behaviour — encouraging supporters to create positive environments for young athletes.
- Mental Health & Wellbeing — promoting everyday skills, conversations and supports that strengthen resilience in sport.
- Child Safeguarding — raising awareness of protective behaviours and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.
- Respectful Relationships — reinforcing the role of sport in building safe, inclusive and respectful environments.
Families engaged in interactive activities, collected free resources, and spoke with the True Sport team about practical steps clubs can take to champion culture, safety and wellbeing across their sporting communities.
A Celebration of Community
The reopening brought together government leaders, cricket representatives and community partners to celebrate the precinct’s transformation. The redevelopment preserves the WACA Ground’s historic character while integrating Aboriginal cultural narratives throughout the design — ensuring the space remains meaningful, inclusive and reflective of Western Australia’s heritage.
For True Sport, being part of this milestone event was an opportunity to connect with thousands of Western Australians and reinforce the important role sport plays in building stronger, healthier and more connected communities.
A New Chapter for the WACA Ground
The WACA Ground Improvement Project has reimagined the precinct into a vibrant destination that brings together elite cricket, community recreation, and family‑friendly amenities. The redevelopment includes world‑class features such as a state‑of‑the‑art High‑Performance Centre with a 10‑lane indoor facility and elite training amenities, supporting athletes from grassroots to the professional level.
Visitors attending the opening also explored The Pavilion — a new aquatic and wellness zone featuring a resort‑style pool, splash park, waterslides, gym facilities and group fitness studios — designed to ensure the WACA Ground is an active community hub all year round.
Looking Ahead
With a revitalised WACA Ground set to host community activities, cricket pathways, and family‑friendly recreation year‑round, True Sport looks forward to continued collaboration with WA Cricket and the broader sport sector to promote safe, positive and inclusive sporting environments for all.
Congratulations again to WA Cricket, the WA State Government, City of Perth and all stakeholders involved in the development of the wonderful sporting precinct.
