SportWest’s True Sport team was honoured to present to the Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC), delivering a session focused on the importance of Mental Health and Wellbeing in school sport environments on 11 October 2024. The presentation aimed to empower educators, sport coordinators, and student leaders with practical strategies to support the emotional and psychological wellbeing of young athletes and participants. The key focus of the presentation was the Employee and Volunteer Assistance Program available through True Sport and the Critical Incident Response eToolkit.
Participants were introduced to the True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative, proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, which offers support such as:
- Mental health awareness campaigns tailored for youth sport
- Referral pathways to professional support services in Western Australia
- Trauma-informed training modules for coaches, administrators, volunteers and staff
- Tools to foster psychologically safe environments
- Resources to encourage open conversations around mental health
The presentation also highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces for students to express themselves, seek help, and feel supported - both on and off the field. Attendees left with a renewed understanding of how sport can nurture not only physical development, but also emotional strength and social connection.
The session explored how sport can be a powerful platform for promoting resilience, connection, and care - especially when guided by trauma-informed principles and inclusive practices. True Sport’s values of Support, Protect, Opportunity, Respect, and Transform were woven throughout the discussion, reinforcing the message that sport is not just about competition - it’s about character, community, and proactive support for mental health and wellbeing.
