SportWest’s True Sport team recently visited Perth Gymnastics Academy, an affiliated club of Gymnastics WA, to deliver an engaging presentation on the importance of positive sideline behaviour and managing difficult situations in community sport. The session focused on how parents, spectators, and coaches can contribute to a supportive and respectful environment that nurtures young athletes both emotionally and physically.
True Sport, proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, uses a values-based approach, with this initiative underpinned by a culture of respect. The workshop explored how sideline behaviour directly impacts athlete wellbeing, performance, and long-term participation. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on their own conduct and consider how small changes - like cheering respectfully, avoiding criticism, and modelling good sportsmanship - can make a big difference.
A key part of the session also addressed Managing Difficult Situations, equipping attendees with strategies to respond calmly and constructively to conflict, tension, or emotional moments during training and competition. This included guidance on:
- De-escalating heated sideline interactions
- Supporting athletes through performance pressure or disappointment
- Communicating respectfully with coaches, officials, and other parents
- Maintaining a values-driven approach during challenging moments
- The importance of club's actively promoting the roles and responsibilities of everyone, as detailed in codes of conduct, Child Safeguarding and Member Protection Policies.
The presentation highlighted key messages from the True Sport Sideline Behaviour Initiative, including:
- Creating a safe and encouraging atmosphere for all participants
- Supporting coaches and officials through respectful engagement
- Reducing pressure and anxiety for young athletes
- Promoting values such as Respect, Accountability and Integrity.
Perth Gymnastics Academy’s commitment to fostering a positive sporting culture was evident, with strong engagement from staff and families eager to champion respectful sideline behaviour and conflict resolution.
