SportWest’s True Sport program proudly delivered a thought-provoking presentation at the Swimming WA Annual Conference, held on Saturday, 5th October 2024 in the Ellis Room at Bendat Basketball Centre. The session focused on two key initiatives of the program - True Sport Sideline Behaviour Initiative and True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative.
Attendees were engaged in meaningful discussions around the impact of sideline conduct on athlete experience, coach retention, and club culture. The presentation highlighted how fostering respectful and supportive environments - both in and out of the pool - can significantly enhance the sporting journey for swimmers of all ages.
The session also addressed the growing importance of mental health in sport, offering practical strategies for clubs to support athlete wellbeing, reduce burnout, and promote resilience. True Sport’s values-based approach provided a framework for clubs to embed these principles into everyday practice.
In addition to the educational content, SportWest provided an overview of the many inclusions and services available to Swimming WA affiliated clubs through Swimming WA’s membership with SportWest. These benefits included:
- Access to True Sport resources and toolkits
- Club development support and training opportunities
- Mental health and wellbeing initiatives such as Employee and Volunteer Assistance Programs
- Advocacy and representation at a state level
- Inclusion programs and community engagement tools
The presentation reinforced True Sport’s commitment to helping clubs create safe, inclusive, and values-driven environments. It was a powerful reminder that sport is not just about competition - it’s about connection, character, and community.
