More than 60 representatives from across Western Australia's sporting sector came together on Monday, 29 June 2026 for the True Sport webinar, Understanding and Implementing the Racial Discrimination Policy, demonstrating the sector's strong commitment to creating safe, respectful and inclusive sporting environments.
Hosted by Jasmine Cappellucci, True Sport Manager at SportWest, the online session formed part of the True Sport Cultural Education Initiative, which supports sporting organisations to strengthen culturally safe practices and promote greater inclusion across community sport.
The webinar was facilitated by Iain Roy, CEO of Sports Integrity and Governance Partners Australia (SIGPA), who played a key role in developing the Racial Discrimination and Vilification Policy and its accompanying implementation resources. Participants gained valuable insight into both the intent of the policy and its practical application within sporting organisations.
Attendees included representatives from State Sporting Associations, regional sports organisations, clubs, governance leaders and integrity professionals from across Western Australia. The session explored:
- Why a dedicated Racial Discrimination and Vilification Policy is necessary in sport.
- What constitutes racial discrimination and vilification and how these behaviours can manifest in sporting environments.
- The rights and responsibilities of individuals and organisations under the policy.
- Processes for responding to complaints and managing breaches.
- Practical steps for policy adoption, endorsement and implementation.
- Strategies for embedding culturally safe practices within organisational culture.
A strong focus was placed on helping organisations move beyond policy compliance and towards meaningful cultural change, ensuring all participants in sport feel respected, welcomed and safe.
The interactive discussion provided attendees with the opportunity to examine real-world scenarios, ask questions and share challenges being experienced within their own sporting environments. Participants also received guidance on available resources and support to assist with policy implementation and ongoing education.
Jasmine Cappellucci said the strong attendance reflected the sector's growing recognition of the importance of addressing racism and discrimination in sport.
"Creating sporting environments where everyone feels they belong is a shared responsibility. The level of engagement in this webinar demonstrates that sporting organisations across Western Australia are committed to building more inclusive, culturally safe and respectful experiences for all participants."
SportWest and True Sport thank Iain Roy for sharing his expertise and all participants for contributing to an important and constructive conversation.
