As part of Mental Health Month, SportWest partnered with the Peel office of the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS Peel) and the City of Mandurah to deliver two targeted True Sport mental health and wellbeing workshops to local sporting communities.
Held at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the sessions welcomed members from Mandurah Basketball Association and Mandurah Swimming Club, equipping them with practical tools to support mental health in sport.
- Understanding How to Support Youth Mental Health
In partnership with Swimming WA, this workshop was delivered to Swimming WA-affiliated clubs with a focus on recognising and responding to youth mental health challenges in community sport. Participants explored the role sport plays in promoting wellbeing, learned age-appropriate support strategies, and gained confidence in identifying referral pathways and escalating concerns when needed.
- Critical Incident Response Workshop
Delivered to Mandurah Basketball Association and its affiliated clubs, this session built capacity in responding to mental health-related critical incidents. Attendees learned how to navigate sensitive situations, understand legal and ethical considerations, and support their communities during challenging times.
A huge thank you to Kellie Lewis from The Mental Health Project for facilitating these impactful sessions, and to CITS Peel and the City of Mandurah for their ongoing support in strengthening mental health literacy across sport.
Together, we’re building safer, more supportive sporting environments for all.
“This workshop was a fantastic example of what can be achieved through genuine collaboration between community sport organisations and all levels of government. By working together - SportWest’s True Sport program, CITS Peel, Mandurah Basketball Association, Swimming WA, Mandurah Swimming Club and the City of Mandurah - we were able to deliver practical, meaningful support to those on the ground, working directly with young people in sport. It’s a privilege to bring True Sport to regional WA and continue empowering community sport leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to build stronger, more inclusive sporting environments.” said Rebekah Yeow, True Sport Project Officer at SportWest.
