On Friday, 23rd May 2025, SportWest was proud to host its annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, a heartfelt event that reminded us all why we do what we do. Held in the presence of the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, the morning was filled with connection, gratitude, and reflection — a true celebration of the people who make sport possible.
This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, “Connecting Communities,” could not be more fitting. Volunteers are the quiet strength behind our sporting communities. They lift others up, create space for belonging, and build bridges between people of all backgrounds. Their impact is profound, and today we paused to acknowledge and celebrate it.
We were honoured to hear from two outstanding guest speakers:
- Tim Cummins, Commodore of the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club
- Mel Farley, Executive Officer of Triathlon Western Australia Inc
Their stories highlighted the deep and lasting impact of volunteering in sport, reminding us of the passion and commitment that drives our community forward.
A special moment during the event was the on-stage Q&A conducted by True Sport Manager, Jasmine Cappellucci, with Executive Director, Mel Farley from Triathlon WA. The discussion focused on their real life experiences with the True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative in their sport, including the use of:
- Critical Incident Response Guides
- Resources, eLearning and the Mental Health Champions Network
- Support services such as the Employee and Volunteer Assistance Program
These resources, made available through the True Sport program, are helping sporting organisations better support their people — both on and off the field.
This event would not have been possible without the generous support of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Volunteering WA.
To all volunteers: Thank you! We appreciate you. And we are grateful for the connections and contributions you make every day in community sport.
