SportWest's True Sport program was proud to support the delivery of the Safeguarding 101 for Sporting Clubs session, held on 4 August 2026, in partnership with Sport Integrity Australia and the WA Government.
Bringing together representatives from sporting clubs and state sporting associations across Western Australia, the session provided practical guidance and resources to help organisations create and maintain child safe environments for all participants.
Delivered in a hybrid format, with attendees participating both in person at the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport in Leederville and online via Microsoft Teams, the workshop highlighted the collective responsibility of sporting organisations to prioritise the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of children and young people.
Participants gained a greater understanding of contemporary safeguarding practices, including how to identify potential concerns, respond appropriately, and navigate reporting processes. The session also reinforced the importance of embedding child safe policies, procedures and behaviours into everyday club operations.
True Sport Manager, Jasmine Cappellucci presented at the session and said opportunities such as Safeguarding 101 are critical to supporting clubs to build safer sporting environments.
"Creating child safe sporting environments requires a proactive and ongoing commitment from everyone involved in sport. Sessions like Safeguarding 101 provide clubs with the knowledge and confidence to understand their responsibilities, recognise concerns and take appropriate action when needed. This work is complemented by the True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative, which supports the broader wellbeing of sporting communities by providing resources, education and support services for administrators, coaches, volunteers, players and supporters. Together, these initiatives help clubs foster environments that are not only safe, but also inclusive, supportive and mentally healthy for everyone involved in sport."
The event formed part of a broader commitment by SportWest, Sport Integrity Australia and DCITS to strengthen safeguarding capability across the Western Australian sport sector. By equipping club leaders, volunteers and administrators with practical tools and information, the sector is better positioned to provide positive, safe and inclusive experiences for children and young people.
