On 18 September 2024, SportWest and the True Sport team proudly participated in the Play Well Roadshow at Ambrose Estate, Wembley Golf Course, alongside sector leaders to shape the future of sport participation and club capability in Western Australia.
What is Play Well?
Play Well is Australia’s sport participation strategy, designed to create inclusive, positive sporting environments where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can enjoy the benefits of sport. The Roadshow shared updates on the strategy and invited WA stakeholders to co-design practical solutions for clubs and associations.
A Day of Collaboration
The event featured interactive workshops and discussions focused on:
- Creating positive environments in community sport
- Embedding a culture of sport in schools
- Modernising sport delivery
- Building club capability
- Planning for Brisbane 2032 legacy opportunities
- Bringing Play Well to life across the sector
Participants reviewed key resources, including the Play Well Strategy, Implementation Plan, and Sport Volunteer Coalition reports, to ensure continuity and progress.
True Sport’s Contribution
Representing SportWest, Troy Kirkham (CEO) and Jasmine Cappellucci (True Sport Manager) shared WA insights and practical tools to help clubs and volunteers create safe, inclusive environments. Key focus areas included:
- True Sport suite of resources and tools available for the WA sporting sector
- Positive environments: game-day routines, clear behaviour expectations, and values-aligned resources and tools.
- Volunteer enablement: simple, time-smart resources for small clubs
- Club capability & integrity: scalable approaches to safety and inclusion
Why It Matters
The Roadshow connected government, sporting organisations, and community leaders to bridge national strategy with local realities. SportWest and True Sport’s involvement ensures WA clubs have practical solutions to support participation, wellbeing, and integrity.
Play Well & True Sport: Shared Vision
Both initiatives aim to make sport safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. While Play Well sets the national roadmap, True Sport delivers on-the-ground action in WA through education, resources, and campaigns addressing mental health, child safeguarding, and sideline behaviour.
Next Steps
Insights from the Roadshow will guide Play Well’s implementation in 2024–25. SportWest and True Sport will continue supporting clubs and volunteers to bring these strategies to life—one training, one game-day, and one positive interaction at a time.
