25 November 2025 marks the beginning of this year’s 16 Days in WA, a campaign urging all Western Australians to take action to end violence against women and family and domestic violence. Led by the Department of Communities and inspired by the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, this initiative raises awareness, drives positive change, and shines a light on those working to create safer communities.
As part of this commitment, the SportWest team proudly joined the 35th March Against Domestic and Family Violence, standing in solidarity with survivors, advocates, and community leaders. Our presence at the march reflects SportWest’s unwavering stance: violence has no place in sport or society.
During the march, we were honoured to walk alongside Sharon Wood Kenney, SportWest's Cultural Navigation Lead, whose leadership and advocacy continue to inspire meaningful change across sporting communities.
“Sport has the power to influence culture and create safe, respectful environments. By standing together today, we reinforce that violence and disrespect have no place in sport or in our communities. Everyone has a role to play in building a future where respect is the norm.”
— Troy Kirkham, CEO SportWest
Through the True Sport Respectful Relationships Initiative, supported by the Department of Creative Industries Tourism and Sport and delivered in partnership with Starick, SportWest champions respect, inclusion, and safety. Values that extend beyond the playing field into everyday life. SportWest is committed to supporting initiatives that promote Respectful Relationships, and we encourage all sporting organisations to join us in this important work.
How You Can Make a Difference
Everyone has a part to play in creating a culture of respect:
- Call out disrespectful behaviour and harmful views when you hear them.
- Model respect towards girls and women, especially when in positions of authority.
- Teach children about respect and healthy relationships, helping them navigate positive behaviours from an early age.
