True Sport and Starick Host Bystander Training Workshop Facilitated by Trent Larkman

On Wednesday, 24 September, True Sport, in partnership with Starick and with support from the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport and the Department of Communities, delivered the Fair Play: Being an Active Bystander in Sport  workshop at Sport HQ in Floreat.

The session brought together sport leaders and administrators from across WA to explore how they can promote respect, challenge harmful behaviours, and create safer, more inclusive sporting environments.

Facilitated by safety and inclusivity educator Trent Larkman from Everyday Actions, the interactive workshop covered:

  • The drivers of family and domestic violence
  • How to recognise harmful language and understand its impact
  • Strategies to respond to challenging behaviour—on and off the field
  • Practical ways to be an active bystander and promote gender equality through sport

With over a decade of experience across Australia and internationally, Trent specialises in fostering safer, more inclusive environments by addressing gendered violence, discrimination, and harmful cultural norms. His work engages individuals and communities in meaningful reflection and action to create lasting cultural change.

This workshop is part of True Sport’s Respectful Relationships initiative and reflects a shared commitment with Starick to prevent violence and foster respectful, equitable sporting communities.

Caroline Tuthill, Starick’s Respectful Relationships Program Manager, shared the significance of the collaboration between True Sport and Starick:

“Through our partnership with True Sport, Starick is proud to support WA sporting clubs in becoming places where everyone feels safe, respected, and included. The Active Bystander workshop empowers WA sports to take action and foster environments where safety and respect are the norm."

The session saw strong engagement from attendees, with open discussion, scenario-based learning, and a shared commitment to making sport a force for positive change.

Thank you to Trent and everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation. Together, we’re building clubs that champion fairness, safety, and respect for all.
