World Mental Health Day with Surfing WA

On Friday 10 October, the SportWest proudly partnered with Surfing WA to support their World Mental Health Day initiative at Trigg Beach. The event brought together surfers, community members, and mental health advocates to celebrate wellbeing in a relaxed, coastal setting.

As part of the initiative, the True Sport team coordinated a free and practical mental health workshop for the Surfing WA community, delivered by mental health professional, Kellie Lewis from The Mental Health Project. Her engaging and down-to-earth approach helped participants explore real-world strategies for recognising signs of mental distress, responding with confidence, and supporting others in meaningful ways.

Both Surfing WA and SportWest were also pleased to welcome key representatives from the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, and Healthway, whose presence highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in promoting mental wellbeing through sport and recreation.

The workshop was designed to be accessible and relevant to the surfing community, with a focus on building resilience and fostering a culture of care, both in and out of the water.

This collaboration reflects True Sport and SportWest’s ongoing commitment to supporting mental wellbeing through sport. By meeting communities where they are, whether on the sidelines or at the shoreline, we’re helping to break down stigma and build stronger, more connected networks.

A huge thank you to the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, Surfing WA, and Kellie Lewis for making this event such a success. Together, we’re riding the wave toward better mental health for all.
